As we cruise towards home – between Tahiti and Fiji, we are passing a few isolated non-inhabited islands. One, Niuafo’Ou, is in fact inhabited. But , this tiny pin-head sized island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean is so isolated, so small, and apparently so covered in volcanic lava , it is really difficult to know what the inhabitants do. What houses we saw appeared to be quite substantial – but we could see no other signs of human occupation – nothing much except lots of coconut trees and lava flows. I must do some more research on this island when we get home.
We did a slow cruiseby – and sent mail to the island (picked up from the ship by islanders in a small boat in “tin cans”).
